I Transform Into An Indian Housemaid....

Indian Housemaids are no Devious Maids (the tv show). They don't wear LBD's, they speak only when spoken to (at least the ones we've had), and they don't parade in front of your husband in shoulder-baring see-through tops! They look like, well, maids - people who clean your house. In this post, I tried my best to dress up like one of them. If you read an old blog post properly, I mentioned that I might do this someday.
*It's in no way to make fun of them, I just wanted to be a housemaid for a day. Don't ask me why. Call it an odd compulsion.
Fact 1: Khalida is the name of our previous maid - the time before we left for the UK. She seemed quite sad that we had to leave. Saw her once when we'd come for a holiday in between. She was sitting on the steps outside the lobby with some kid, whom she was babysitting. She looked glad to see us =) {But she doesn't look like this}
Fact 2: Our present maid comes in 3 times a week. Work includes only sweeping & mopping. No dusting, coz we don't want to have to worry about keeping valuables away. By valuables, I mean my makeup...hehe. No washing dishes, coz we have a dishwasher. No laundry either.
Fact 3: Now I understand more why our maid doesn't like to stay on the balconies for too long. Once I asked her why she didn't mop the grills. My first thought was she's being lazy. Then she said "Bahut dhoop hai, isliye" (Too much sun/too hot, that's why). By the time I was done pretending to be this housemaid, my face was sticky, my hair looked like it's been oiled. I couldn't wait to get in the shower! (*Temperature is usually over 45° here.) I have decided she can skip doing the balconies when it's too hot from now onwards.
Fact 4: I did stamp all over the front of the saree while photographing .... and it came off. If it doesn't look right, that's because I have never draped a saree myself before.
"Vacuum Shakoom
Broomstick is the best!"

Colin Kitchen Cleaner for counter tops - removes oil & greasy stains.
Colin Power Cleaner for sinks - removes hard water stains.

"My favorite handwash. Smells like men's colon (cologne), expensive colon (cologne)"

*It really is! This is Godrej Protekt Masterchef's Handwash. Love the packaging too!

"Maroon bindi is my favorite accessory. It's my trademark."

"Makeup and Shoes. Madam's whole life!"

"My husband says Vidya Balan & I look same to same."

 Khalida's Makeup & Outfit:

Face ~ Bourjois Bronzing Primer & Benefit Hoola. I just wanted to make my skin look sunburned.

Eyes ~ Maybelline Colossal Kajal & Bourjois Intense Eyeshadow Black #10

Eyebrows ~ Bourjois Kohl & Contour Pencil in Brun Design & a little bit of the black eyeshadow.

Lips ~ Nothing.

Tikka on Forehead ~ MAC RiRi Woo Lipstick (hahaha!)

Saree ~ Ordered it from Yebhi.com for around Rs.300

Black Top ~ Couldn't get a ready-made choli blouse, so.

Earrings ~ From Lajpat Nagar Market (the ones shown here)

Nose Ring ~ Clip-on which is one of the silver ones I wore in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo look here. I painted it with gold nail polish.

Maroon Bindi ~ Also from Lajpat Nagar Market

Bangles & Bracelets ~ Bangles I bought (came in a pack of multi-colored ones). Found these bracelets in one of my old jewelry boxes =D

And that is another look for my I Transform Series.......

One more look out of those coming next week! Someone might join me in this one ;)

If you want to request for a specific look in the 'Readers' Choice' one, just comment and let me know!

Enjoy your Friday, everyone! Hope you found this....umm....at least entertaining? =D

Now please entertain me too & tell me some funny housemaid stories, if you have any.

***UPDATE: I wrote a post regarding the misunderstandings on this. Please read HERE.

  1. Being born & raised in the Netherlands (but originally Indian), this post only reminds me of the fact that there is still such class disparaty in India and huge differences between "maids" and their employers.

  2. even if you are indian i find it a bit offensive. Well i think is maybe the kind of society you live in.

    1. Its a look which is common and practical for maids in India... Nobody feels offended when someone emulates a french maid look. In any case it's an "I transform series" and the whole tone of this look is very light and sweet....

    3. @ Rafat: the difference is that French maids get paid a decent salary and that in India, maids have to deal with completely different circumstances and class disparity that is not comparable with maids in France. You can hardly compare the two.

    4. If she tried a Disney Princess look she would be cute. But if she tries the look of a maid, she is being class-conceited! Get out of it girl! Maids are an important parts of our daily lives and it is commendable that someone notices how they dress and tries to emulate that. Good job Cynthia

  25. Hi Cynthia, no offence but this post is really offensive! I know you didn't really intend to poke fun at maids but unfortunately its just in really bad taste.
For a person living a relatively comfortable life to have an " odd compulsion " to be a maid is just sad and offensive in general.

    Love your blog :)
But this post seriously was in bad taste.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I totally agree, I usually love your blog posts but just because you say it isn't intended as offensive doesn't mean it isn't. I mean darkening up your face and showing basically how a poor person tends to the rich, it's patronising. The people who find it amusing probably have maids too. Yeah there are maids in other countries too but it's not quite comparable, when you factor in the particular social/caste issues in India. Sometimes in the US, people do mock Latin maids and it is seen as racist and offensive by those who care about these issues.

I'm not trying to be mean, just trying to explain why people would find it offensive.

      Delete
    2. I Found it quite offensive personally, mocking the poor and underprivileged classes basically and yes just because you say it is not meant to be offensive does not mean it is not, you are also mocking the way they speak English, did you ever thought they might not be as privileged as you are?and last time I checked English was not the national language of India Nothing funny about it at all and quite suprising to see others find it so hilarious, those who probably ''keep'' maids ...........how would you feel if we mock ''Chinkis'' the same way? let me guess, you and the several thousands of North Easterns would start a war

      Delete
    3. also, Having lived in Shillong for some time, I can vouch for the fact that it is very common in North-Eastners to mock the less privilged as most of them parade around in expensive clothing, shoes, makeup etc and see anyone who dresses otherwise as ''poor'' ''and ''inferior'', it is very common among people of the North East to behave this way so I am not suprised at all

      Delete
    4. Pls stop it friends and stop showing lip sympathy towards the unprivileged ... just because you are defending maids doesn't make you more conscientious people. If you are so passionate and concerned about the welfare of the unprivileged class do something for their up liftment instead of abusing Cynthia......

      Delete
    5. @Nats Girl- Why should you find it "personally" offensive? Also, CZ dressed like the poor class.. how can you call that 'mocking the poor class' ? According to your other comments, parading around in expensive clothes is 'mocking'. Also, making fun of the way one speaks in called 'humor' and Indians don't get offended by it. North Eastern Indians have been called 'Chinkis' for decades and even now they're called so and No One has raised a war over it.
If you feel so much for the 'poor class of India' you're welcome to come here and help them rather than blasting hapless people on the web.

      Delete
    6. Hi CZ! BOTTOM LINE....You are an awesome beauty blogger but this post was a bit offensive in general.
@Lana Ray dressing as-you so eloquently said-the "poor class" when one does not really belong to that "class" and doing it just for the sake of showing a "I-transform" os definitely offensive.
Also, making fun of the way one
speaks is definetely not humor, it maybe "humor" where you come from but really there is nothing funny about it.

CZ you really are awesome! Truly, this post on the other hand was... well kinda not cool.

Love you! Take care and stay blessed :*

    7. Indians in general do also have a certain accent which people outside of India find it 'different' and not easy to understand it if you're not an Indian yourself. we do have many brilliant software engineers working in Malaysia & Singapore. Although many try to cover it by adding fake accent yet we do not mock them. The maids do not have sunscreen and all the other stuffs to protect their skin, indirectly this is looking down on them..so yeah..this post is not cool.

    8. Great!! Pot calling the kettle black.!! I have been to abroad several times. I know how South Asians speak english - Chinese english !!! Hah !! Its really sad and appalling that people who are living outside india with their limited knowledge and blinkered vision are shamelessly nit picking. They have no idea how wicked these house maids are!! Still these people are condemning Cynthia. This blog is not meant for discussing social and economic issues. it is very easy to sit in front of the laptop and pass judgement but very difficult to practically do something for the unprivileged class. free advise is like an asshole , everyone has one!! ..Stop it friends now. U have humiliated your much loved Cynthia a lot. Being indian and having battery of house maids trust me except for the Look , Cynthia has not said anything disparaging about them. You girls are getting over critical. At the same time Cynthia its my humble suggestion to you is you got to be politically correct being a blogger. You are looking fab in your Indian get up but emulating a house maid was not required.!! Lets end this controversy here and wait for Cynthias next update. ♡♥♡♥ Sonia.

      Delete
    9. @Sonia first of all nobody and absolutely nobody here asked anybody, including Cynthia to do anything at all for the, as you say ''underprivileged class'' some of us who just felt it is very offensive the way she mocked ''them''(as you guys say,as if they are people from another planet!) There is a huge difference between the two.....show me one comment where anybody ''advised'' to do anything,we just felt it is wrong to mock ''maids'' this way.

Also you saying maids are ''wicked'' says enough about you, as if all ''maids'' are a ''group''.......maids are people just like you or even Cynthia(Shocking Right!) duhhh , just because someone is poor and is forced to work for others to make a living does not make them any less of human beings.

And you say ''anything disparaging about them'' was not being said, then how would you explain the mocking of the way ''they'' speak?

      Delete
    10. @Lana Ray- I Find it ''personall'' offensive because I care about issues unlike you who does not give 2 f**** about people mocking the ''less privileged''

Making fun of the way others speak, especially when it comes to ''speaking english'' is certainly not humorous to ''decent people''

      Delete
    11. Oh so you're a decent person abusing Indians... Great!! Also thanks a lot for calling indians indecent..makes you look so good. Also, Miss "Personally Offended" do highlight what you have done for the underpriveleged except for typing away nonsense on a keyboard

    12. Nats girl .you look frustated.go and get a life. Dont even dare to again on this topic else I will do a nice dissection of your comments in crisp Hindi . Then you will run crying mummy mumny.
      Sonia.

      Delete
    13. Hahha so much butthurt on this post :3 would people find it equally offensive if you dressed up as someone rich and famous? House maids in India do dress a certain way and dressing up like them is NOT offensive. These people raising a furor here are probably the ones who just shake their heads at cases of maid abuse; now, that is offensive! Get your priorities straight people.
And did someone really stereotype all NE people by basically saying we have an attitude problem? Dammn!!

      Delete
    14. @Lana Ray okay first of all my advice to you is use your own name instead of using a fake name of a famou's singer's.

second, when did I claimed I am not Indian, little miss-assume-it-all? Didn't you read I even lived in Shillong for some time?

3)What do you mean by Miss "Personally Offended" do highlight what you have done for the underpriveleged except for typing away nonsense on a keyboard........your comment makes no sense at all, so you think if I get offended by such a post, it means I have not done anything for the underprivileged and that you can call me what you want? what are YOU doing here typing nonsense........ So according to you girls standing up for what one feels is right is ''typing nonsense'' bravo! keep it up!

and I did not called ''Indians'' indecent cuz I am myself one... I Called YOU indecent, YOU are calling making fun of how others speak is called humor....don't try to portray all Indians are like you, selfish and lame, it is YOU not whole India

      Delete
    15. @Sonia you sound totally retarded....''mummy mummy'' ...WTF..... you need proffesional help

    16. Nuts girl, baby, you need some love, look how ugly and eyesore you have become on this post. Thanks for the suggestion, please refer me to your tried and tested shrink. here, we all are desperate to purge out your negative, caustic, prejudiced, insane thoughts out of our system, ASAP. . I am wondering if you are an English speaking maid employed somewhere in my posh locality, settling score and deep rooted resentment with the privileged class.!!! Now if you have a modicum of shame left in you, don't come back, get a life. happiness and love are only cure for all your frustration and aggression.

all those , who have expressed undue resentment on this post, it is not a crime to have a divergent viewpoint. having said that , we all would go gaga if any famous actor or actress play a role of a servant in a movie. we would admire their getup as their profound effort to get into the skin of that character, we would pour our adulation and put likes of our acceptance, consider them as humble for stepping down for the role play, BUT if a blogger does that or her followers support that they are abused ,persecuted for their support!!! what kind of rationality is that!!! think about it!!!

  29. I'm not Indian so I can't claim that I am offended by this post do I do find it in poor taste. I'm from Southeast Asia and currently studying political science, some of my research has been on Southeast Asian laborers and domestic workers who go overseas that are often forced into human trafficking, severely abused, or forced to work in abysmal conditions. I'm surprised that's the demographic that you would choose to imitate. You are very lucky that at the end of the day, you can go back to your life of "makeup and shoes" and that this was just an exercise in dressing up, while it is reality for so many others.

cynthia..i would love to see more in i transform series. id would be fun to see u transform into a tv serial bahu with loads of obvious make up, heavy jewellery and saree, those who go to bed with makeup saree and jewellery on. oh and wickedly arched eyebrows.
We have a nepali couple who do all the work and we call the guy...bahadur ofcourse. their 1.5 yr old daughter chaaru (i named her that) is a parrot..she would keep repeating everything. when i call my mom mumma, she also does mumma mumma mummaaaa continously untill we play with her! adorable!

  38. CZ just calm down your air-of-superiority. A woman who insults maids, calls other people trolls who just answer back at your not-so-glamourous face, and thinks it below her to answer, huh, it needs a backbone to admit self faults miss. What are you, as tiny as a toothprick, hooded eyes>-), thin hair, biotin addict, just makeup. Are your a post graduate or P.hd holder or a 10 pass? Eat some makeup and be beautiful inside first. Just someday show us a the 'tiny' rakhi sawant behind all that cake makeup...i bet people shall stop even thinking of opening your page, whoooosh, it shall be gone in months...Throw that attitude in some dustbin near you.....and please, for god's sake, stop scaring with those creepy nails of yours. 1. Hello? This blog IS about beauty and makeup. Were you expecting discussions of the current budget on it? Commenting on someone's body features is extremely rude. You may or may not like such blogs. Do not read them babe if you do not like the eyes, hair and nails and blah blah blah. I do not know what degree you hold, but definitely none on humour or manners. Just because someone dresses like maids does not mean she is insulting the maids. Rather those who think that dressing up as a maid is making fun of them are the ones who distinguish between the classes. If only CZ knows the real person behind her make up, then who are you to comment on her? Gaurav go get some fresh air. I don't think anyone was really looking forward to your appreciation.

  39. It doesn't make sense. I occasionally read this blog for beauty tips, make-up looks. What exactly am I supposed to be taking from this transformation?
Someone above gave an example of people dressing up as French maids..I think if they try to dig even a tiny bit deeper they will understand why that particular dress up is so popular. But this one..I don't get.

    1. This is not a school dammit. This is a place for fun and thats what we're doing here. Cz didn't start this blog to teach you every single day, she would have opened a beauty school otherwise. Dressing up is one of CZ's favorite things to do and that's what she's doing here. Glad to know you won't reply, I'm not a fan of drama either

  40. Well Hello, why is everyone offended if she is dresses as a housemaid , why nobody will offend when she will dress as a rich , famous celeb , how can u think this post is offensive , when CZ is herself dresses as a maid , has anyone seen an abusive comments against indian maids , then why is such a huge politics going on a beauty blog , and why insult the NE people , not all are same , it's common in India , but NE people are indian's and it's not there fault that they look different , the topic was about a transformation , why was it taken to somewhere between politics and insult (P.S im north indian not an NE) Btw, no maids will be reading this post , so it's not gonna hurt them , but the author of the post is reading your comments , and she is surely hurt , So if u can't say good things about the post, don't dare to say something bad about it as well !!

    1. Why is everyone offended if she dresses like a housemaid? Seriously? Are you that daft? Nobody would have a problem if dresses as you said a " rich famous celeb" because she is so much closer to being that than a maid! Well she kinda is a celeb.

The fact that she made a concerted effort to dress like one and talk like one ( "favrit" Anyone?) is what is offensive. I don't have anything against CZ, on the contrary I think she is awesome! This post on the other hand was not thought through.

Just because no maids are reading this post does not make it any less offensive. And if you think just because maids are "reading this post" makes it not-offensive then you are dafter than I originally thought you to be.

And who made you the queen of this world for you to say something like, " if u can't say good things about the post, don't DARE to say something bad about it as well !! " So, it's okay for people like you to openly threaten readers of this blog just because they have a different opinion than yours?

I have been a reader of this blog for years any any " opposing " opinion that I do have I know how to present it in a civil manner.

CZ you are awesome, I love your posts! I have bought and loved so many products after reading your posts on them, I just think this post was offensive. Much Love!

    4. You really are daft aren't you? It took you 2 and a half hours to come up with " And lol I cant threaten anyone , u probably wud be years elder to me ".

      Anywho, threaten you did.

      Tc of yourself. God bless.

  41. hi CZ! I am a silent follower of your blog and I love it to bits :) I usually feel lazy to comment on blogs but after reading all the bullshit comments against u I really must! People with all the negativity n yes you hatters should try to broaden up ur minds. You all know that This is how an indian maid usually dress up n Cz tried her best to look as one. so she used bronzer to achieve that dusky look, so wat!!we indians have dusky skin n if u are insecure at being dusky then thats ur issue not hers! why are u offended by dt! i dnt thnk an actress will put on a perfect wing eye for a role as an underpriviledged.if u had been a constant follower of this blog then u will know that its not just a blog bout make up, its bout creativity too. So get this u thick headed hypocrite haters, being politically correct is one thing n being a sane person is another. if it offends u so much then dnt check out this blog. NOBODY is forcing u to!

  42. So basically don't say anything unless you have something good to say? I mean isn't this typical - ignore what makes you uncomfortable. Turn a blind eye to something you find offensive. See I'm on the fence on this one. I don't think it was the blogger's intention to be crass, I just think it wasn't thought through.
Frankly, more than the post, its the readers' language what is bothering me. The tone and language of the comments, of both the for and against readers, is more degrading and offensive than the post itself. CZ don't you think you can address all this and put an end to it? Instead of letting others fight it out for you.

  43. I have always followed this blog, not just for make-up but the other humorous posts which are equally entertaining. CZ - you are doing a great job. 1stly this is YOUR blog so your personal space to put up anything you want. 2ndly the Indian Maid has been caricatured time again on comedy shows, serials, award nights etc etc. And Indians watch and enjoy them everyday and never raise a voice. So why is it wrong now? The very positive side about this post is the fact that you have taken the trouble to do her job for a day and in fact understood the difficulties of working in heat, etc. etc. So Kudos! More entertaining posts please!

  45. Hey haters, pls check this link. http://m.indiatoday.in/story/first-look-of-bobby-jasoos-out-vidya-balan-dons-male-beggars-avatar/1/327419.html. national award winner vidya balam has transformed into a begger for her upcoming film. Now all the beggers and haters should unite and burn her effigy , write her hate mails , abuse her for snob attitude but please spare cynthia now. You have a brand new project on hands ! ...but if I like vidyas transformation , I will definitely nominate her for an award :p :p Sonia ☆★☆★

    1. It's Vidya "Balan"

Sonia is it? Firstly, you need to realize there is a difference between being a "hater" and having a " different opinion" look it up. Done? Ok, I was equally aghast by some of the derogatory things and personal comments made by certain people about Cynthia.

That being said the post in general was offensive. Vidya Balan has nothing to do with it. You wanna promote her film just for the heck of it. Go right ahead.

Just because you are " For " the post does not make others who thought that the post probably was a bit offensive "haters". The people who are out hurling abuses and making racist remarks those are the haters.

The regular readers of Cynthia's blog have nothing against Cynthia, we just found her post not in good taste that's it. Posting multiple comments about everyone who has a difference of opinion and clubbing us as "haters and beggars" won't get you any good will honey.

CZ is great, the post wasn't. You on the other hand are utter rubbish.

I don't need to justify anything to you my comment was a snarky and apt reply to your rubbish.
Now go on have a life and ease it on the* EXCLAIMATION MARKS !!! * already.

    1. Anonymous Aunty! haha! that's the best you got? "Sonia" Pot calling kettle black! Anyone can make a fake account and call themselves "Sonia". In fact I bet you are Nat's Girl! Because wherever there is a comment by Nat's Girl " Sonia " swoops in to "save" the day! That is really low Sonia even for a "Wannabe Sonia" like you. Anyway I have a life. and don't really want to spend the rest of my day with a fake like you.

      Ciao!

I hope realise that you are " Nat's Girl " and how twisted you really are.

Love Cynthia just didn't like the post, whereas you " Sonia " a.k.a "Nat's Girl" seriously get lost.

You have spewed enough venom to last us all months.

    I bid adieu.

  50. you look like a retard to me now. some people cant be counselled with words they need a good spanking!! you belong to this category!!! you have very conveniently diverted the topic to Nats girl. I take ownership of my above comments. i am not a coward like you who would hide under the veil and protection of anonymity, so i always mention my name Sonia in the end . if you really love Cynthia then show her, don't just pretend and hurl obnoxious remarks on her post. people who genuinely love someone also have a power of forgiveness but you have not forgiven Cynthia even after a week for a harmless post , she doesn't even look like a maid. she is looking much better and hygienic than an average traditional Indian house wife who does her house chores on her own!!!. people like you have a problem with everything , and love to misuse their writing skills in the name of freedom of expression !!! Go to hell you freak............. Sonia.

  51. Sonia I don't want to talk to you. You have a personality disorder. I am no one to "forgive" CZ stopping twisting my words. People like you are trolls. Jhagdalu Losers who don't know how to let a topic go! I am ready to let go of this conversation from my end. Yet you continue to stretch and stretch and stretch some more this topic.

Let it go, this conversation is over. Continuing on and hurling abuses at me just shows your lack of maturity.
As far as me thinking that you are Nat's Girl... well I am entitled to my opinion yet I am ready to back out if you stop behaving in a junglee manner.

I don't want to carry on this conversation any more than I have to.
As far as me being a coward is concerned I would rather be anonymous than take a fake name.

That being said. Sonia I end this conversation from my side and I request you to do the same. We are doing nothing but hurling and exchanging insults and increasing the comment count.

So, if you know how to utilise your writing skills I suggest we end this conversation and act as adults.

    Take care.

  52. What's with the spanking? Sonia I don't want to speak with you. I am no one to "forgive" CZ.
This topic is over from my side. Yet you continue to stretch, stretch and stretch some more. Learn to realize when a conversation is over.
All this shows to me is that you are a troll and a Jhagdalu female.
I still stand by my opinion that you are 'Nat's Girl' and I am entitled to it. But I am ready to leave the topic be if you behave and realize that this conversation is over.
I would rather be anonymous than take a fake name.
I don't have a "problem with everything" I just have a problem with your attitude.
I am ready to end this conversation right here right now and I would request you to do the same because all what we are doing is hurtling abusing at each other and increasing the comment count.
So, if you know how to utilise your writing skills then I would request you to let the topic go and end this conversation on a cordial/civil note.

    Take care.
