Why I DON'T Gain Weight (Anymore)

Okay, jinx much? I'll probably balloon up after this post...haha! Thing is, a few people were waiting for this post ever since I tweeted it on Twitter about it a couple months back, and I promised somebody it will be up today  yesterday (such a proper Indian I am!)
Before you read the rest, I just want to say that I'm not obsessed with losing weight. I don't even try, and I can be a real glutton when it comes to the foods I love. Some of the things & tips I list may sound ridiculous, but they're all I know. I will only be telling you what I eat, what I don't eat, and some of my habits, that I do believe play a big part in my weight- or the lack of it.

Brief Weight History
Then: I used to be very plumpy between my teens & early 20's. Verging on fat during hostel years. My stomach looked like I was at least 2 months pregnant (maybe 3), I had a double chin & plumper cheeks that pushed my thicker hooded eyes further down when I smiled. I could stand in front of the mirror for hours just lifting my top up & sucking in my tummy wishing it were flatter*. I also looked shorter because my body was rounder, obviously. And boy did I eat like a pig! Mountains of rice & potatoes, momos, cheeseburgers, bread pakoras, etc. I couldn't get enough of Vermicelli pudding & mishti doi (Bengali yogurt). My body made me so self-conscious, that I always made it a point to walk behind people, not in front of them.
Now: Now I have that tummy I wished for*. No more double chin , my eyes look bigger, I have cheekbones, my legs look a bit longer. I could be happier with my body, but at least I'm no longer self-conscious, and I don't have to suck in my stomach every time I wear tight clothes.
How? I simply stopped eating. Not because I wanted to lose weight, but because I got bored of food. I remember exactly what I ate during the time I started losing weight: 1 egg & tea in the mornings, tea & tea in the afternoons......dinner after 8. That's it.
Apart from eating less, I have certain habits & foods that I do & don't like to eat:
#1 I Always Smell My Food Before Eating:  A-l-w-a-y-s. I developed this habit ever since I was a kid, because I hated butter, and I was always paranoid it's touched everything I ate. Back then, I had a nickname which basically means "stick skinny". I was a very picky eater.  I remember grown-ups would say "How will you get healthy if you smell everything like that?" But these days, it isn't just the food, I smell the crockery & drinking water, too (esp. in restaurants). Old habits do die hard. I did a little bit of research, and some actually believe smelling food before eating makes you eat less, or something like that... I don't know. I just know that a  lot of old people in my culture believe that smelling food before eating it makes you thin & unhealthy.
#2 I Eat The Hottest Chillies: I cannot live without chillies! I will dip green chilies on red chilly powder and eat it. Some studies have shown that chillies break down body fat, and it could be true. I currently eat the second hottest chilly in the world called Naga Bhoot or Bhut Jolokia, also known as Ghost Chilly & Ghost Pepper. It used to be the world's hottest chilli, until it was superseded by Trinidad Moruga Scorpion (I WANT!) Picture of the ghost chillies below (yes, I took a packet with me to England).....
They have been dried up so they have a longer shelf life. Now, you don't eat the whole chilli, you just cut a teeny-tiny piece as small as a grain of rice. That's enough to make you redden if you're not used to hot & spicy foods. Not only is it HOT, it tastes good too - delicious hotness that's super addictive. This chilly grows in the Indian states of Assam, Nagaland and Manipur, and also in some parts of Sri Lanka (where it's called 'cobra chili'.... LOL)

#3 I Eat Slowly: I'm the slowest eater I know. I finish last- everywhere, with anybody! Not because I eat more, but because I'm just that- slow. I think you chew more when you eat slowly, hence you get full quicker? Eat your dinner in front of the tv if you wanna slow down. Btw, I never chewed my food in the past. I remember my school friend would look at me eat my lunch and she used to say to me more than once: "How can you just swallow your food straight away like that?" She, on the hand, would chew a spoonful of food 15 times before swallowing it. Yes, she was thinner than I was.

 What I Eat/Drink:
  • A slice/chunk of lemon after dinner. I also squeeze some on those chillies up there. I do it simply because I love sour things. But it's not a myth that lemons help keep the fat away.
  • I drink a lot of tea (with milk & brown sugar) 4-6 times a day. I'm somewhat of  a tea addict. Simply because I love it, not because I think it makes me thin. But I know it makes me feel less hungry for food.
  • Black Salt: I eat a lot of salt, and I have to have it on the side of my plate every time (especially with the lemons). So, I've replaced white salt with black. I guess it helps digestion & prevents bloating.
  • I know this is very cliché, but I do drink A LOT of water. I go through more than 10 glasses per day. I never used to drink much water, but ever since my tonsils started acting up again, my throat always feels dry.

 What I Don't Eat/Drink:
  • BUTTER: Like I said, I've always hated butter. I especially hate how it smells.  I don't keep it the house & Mr.CZ has also given it up (but he's allowed to eat it if he's in another country away from me...haha!). I know it's in some of the things I eat, like scones, but as long as I don't see it being made & it's not in it's original form, it's fine. It's one of the reasons I somewhat killed my inner baker (I used to take baking classes). What I hate more than the smell of butter? The smell of Desi Ghee. Let's not even go there. [FYI, my kid(s) will never know something called butter exists, okay ;)]
  • Too Much Potatoes: I believe they massively contributed to my weight gain during my hostel days, coz that was all the cheapos fed us.
  • Sweets: Maybe I'll eat one piece of chocolate in 2-3 weeks. I used to LOVE chocolates, ice creams, pastries, etc. Perk used to be my weakness. But I just stopped liking all of them suddenly! I think spicy stuff & chillies took over completely.
  • Bread: I don't like bread very much. I'd eat it only if it's toasted or fried (maybe a slice  a month). It's because I associate it with butter. When I was kid, somebody shoved a buttered bread down my throat, because somebody thought I was only "pretending" not to like it. Talk about scarred for life. I still have not forgiven somebody & I do not like somebody.
  • Aerated drinks: Coke, Pepsi, etc...I don't get why people, including Mr.CZ, like them so much.

Extra Tips To Lose Weight:
  • Fall in love! Right after I met Mr.CZ, I stopped craving everything I used to love eating - including cheese burgers, which I ate everyday. I ate so less suddenly that I fainted in one of the outdoor handbag shops in Sarojini Nagar Market once....but twice in one day. After that, my weight went down to 35 kgs.... people didn't recognize me anymore.... and I didn't care.
  • DANCE, baby! Yes, dance. It beats exercise, any day. Not the sophisticated moves you'd do in nightclubs, I mean the crazy jumping style. Gangnam Style would be the perfect song right now.
  • If You Want a Flat Tummy: Never ever stroke or pat your tummy like a pet after eating. You know, when you're feeling too full or too satisfied? This is another superstitious saying I grew up with.

Weight Loss Method That Worked [Not Advised]:
My cousin used to be overweight, and along with crash dieting & red tea + lemon, she took Safi, the blood purifier, everyday. Overweight to slim in a couple of months. But she fainted once while we were shopping, that's why it's not advised. I just think it's worth sharing, because it worked for her & her dramatic transformation shocked everybody. Of course, she had a baby last year and is now double the size she used to be. Sigh, these babies I tell ya =D

It's YOUR Body & YOU Know What's Best For It
What I'm saying is, other people will always find something negative to say, especially about  your looks & body. Funnily, these type of people are usually the most un-fabulous beings. They'll think you're too fat, or too thin. But you know what, if you are happy with your body, it doesn't matter what others think. Look out for b**chy comments masked as concern:
"Sweetie, you're disappearing =(" or "Sweetie, your stomach is bigger than you =("
You say: "Sweetie, I don't give a tiny rat's a**."

Be Careful What You Wish For:
Unfortunately, there's a downside to dramatic weight loss, and what I personally have to live with:
  • My small feet became smaller. Size 35 used to fit me fine back then, but now it's too big.
  • My pigmentation started to show right after I lost the fat from my face. I think because it's a hereditary thing, it had always been there beneath the surface, but the fat prevented it from showing up.
  • Stretch marks on hips appeared after I lost weight, and when do appear, they will almost NEVER leave. So if you're working at losing weight, moisturize your body well with stretch marks creams & oils everyday.
  • Now I'm eating to get some meat back. Mainly for my skin & my bodycon dresses/pencil skirts. Oh, and my feet!
BUT.......
It's not happening. My weight is stuck at 39-40 kgs, and nothing is getting fatter, because I can't give up the lemons & chillies.... eating chocolates & desserts is like a chore .....and I sniff  before I even realize it!

Hope those tips helped you out in some way. If any of you have your own tips to keep your weight in check, please share in the comments below so others can also benefit from them.
P.S. This was such a long post and I was so tired of editing it in the end, so please excuse any mistakes in the writing if you spotted any =)

    1. You're only 90 pounds which is fine. You don't need to be losing weight. I was 110 at your age 5 feet. Exercise and eat a balanced meal with nutritious foods. Drink milk. You could tone your body for muscle over fat, but losing weight isn't the answer. You could try ab toning workout videos.

    3. Hi there, that's so sweet of you to say! Thank you. Hey, it's too early for you to be thinking about cutting down... let your body develop first. Dieting is useless in your teens coz your body will keep changing. If you're worried about a big tummy, just do some crunches or yoga (pranayam). They help a lot. Have a vegetable salad with a squeeze of lemon juice with your dinner. Also, don't eat too much sweets & junk food. Drink green tea everyday, if you like it. Believe me, 41 kgs is very fine for your age. You grow up only once, so enjoy the ride...there's plenty of time later to worry about your weight :)

  6. Dear anonymous, at 14, apart from exercise and avoiding junk food, there is nothing else you can do and remain healthy. 41 kgs is NOT heavy. You will lose weight in a year or so.. Right now your body is preparing to develop into womanhood. Your periods, breast development, Skin are all going to go through hormonal changes. A diet at this stage will just mess up your body as you turn into an adult and make it permanent.
So just avoid all that junk, and play games, take part in stuff, stay active, and you will be fine, I promise.

I usually don't comment on other people's posts, but my friend in school was obsessed with her weight when she was the most sought after girls in school, till it got out of hand, and by the time we finished college, she already had ulcers and her periods stopped completely, and doctors told her she could never have kids.

But I was also a teenager, and I know what an awkward phase it is, in a girl's body.. curves appearing overnight, and suddenly you feel like its not your body, or the body you are used to.... But.. Like I said, its a phase, necessary to turn us into the bombshells we are going to turn into :) And for the next 3-4 years, you are gonna go through more awesome changes, and feel more and more confident.

Would love to lose a couple of kgs n tone up but I'm not fretting if it doesn't happen. Have started yoga to tone up my body so lets c...
I hate butter and ghee too and even the smell of it but I put a decent amount of both on my kids rotisserie...in fact I only give them ghee maid at home....no store bought stuff for them.
I LOOOOOVVVVEEEE chocolates tho and my fridge always has loads of my fave Lindts...well, that's my guilty pleasure.

  16. Hi! I usually like your posts and think that you have a great sense of fashion. I found this post really odd. Starving is not the solution to weight problems. I am someone who has struggled with body issues all her life so I know the desperation to look slim. However, destroying your body to achieve that perfect figure is not an option in my opinion

  17. OMG Cynthia I can't believe you were overweight at any point. I've always seen you so petite, I assumed you've always been like this! Its a blessing when you're not attracted to butter, sweets, potatoes and other fattening things! I started piling on weight during high school, lost quite a bit with exercise and diet control in college and put a lot back on in the final year with all the stress and lack of discipline! Now back on controlled eating and workout routine, losing weight and gaining muscle but still a long way to go!

  22. Girl, I LOVE your blog. But this post is a bit shocking. You are stating you lost weight because you "simply stopped eating". This might encourage some girls to do the same and that is NOT the way to go. It can cause serious health problems. You are also saying numbers such as 35 kgs and 40 kgs, and without a height next to them (such as AT LEAST 150 cm/4'11!) those numbers are shockingly low.

Just for the record, I think your attitude & willingness to share is amazing and I agree with you that it is all about how YOU feel. Obviously I just think health is the most important thing, not losing weight or being the thinnest girl.

For any of the girls who want to lose weight: don't just stop eating. It will destroy your body, just eat regularly, load up on fruits & veggies and avoid eating too much junkfood and sugary things such as chocolate and candy bars.

    1. Im also shocked by this post. Telling someone to stop eating to lose weight is kind of harsh. I think you should have emphasized healthier vs. Not eating at all. Since many of your readers are teenagers this does have an impact on them and their body image.

Atleast a disclaimer to talk to someones gp before trying to drastically lose weight should be included.

  25. Hi Cynthia! I'll be turning 19 next month, and I'm 5'3". I have a pear shaped body, heavier on the hips and thighs, and I was wondering if you knew any ways to help me put on weight on my upper body? You know, to balance out my body, because I'd like to be able to wear different kinds of outfits and not just confine myself to clothes which flatter pear-shaped bodies.
Btw, I'm a hostelite too, and I shed LOTS of weight within a year of joining college (and hostel) thanks to mess food, and became noticeable (shallow people eh?) and now I'm putting on weight again, and horrifyingly on my tummy and it's very unpleasant. I'd like to nip this in the bud before my tummy swells up! Any tips on that too?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Ashwini, I'm the wrong person to be asked this, coz I really don't have any expertise in weight issues. But I hear that with pear-shaped bodies, you have to eat more carbs & proteins, and cut down on saturated fat. If I were in your shoes, I guess I'd do that & exercise or do yoga steps that target areas from the stomach down. With the tummy, try out the yoga cobra pose, which I found very effective. It's easy to do & it's fun :). Please find other tips on google or books which will probably be able to help you out more.

  27. Dnt tell me DIVA was a bhenji once... Loved this post!!! 5'.5"- 48kg I am slightly under weight, My biological age is lesser than my actual age, so I am happy being under weight. Where girls who are actually younger than me have biological age of 35+. So at time under weight does have plus too. If you eat healthy and are active then there is no harm being slightly under weight. However fainting is strict NO-NO. Btw all people says after marriage there is weight gain, so I dnt know if I will be gaining weight too post marriage. :-(
I would suggest all of you to get your biological age determined, it will actually tell how BAD-GOOD your body is...
Eg- If you are 25yrs and your biological age is 32yrs it means that, your current body state is that of a 32yr old and accordingly nutritionist will suggest you diet plan. Similarly @ 25yr if your of 22yr of biological age then girl your are doing great and are well maintain. feel young :-)

  28. is that the chilli which can actually burn the hand as well if touched with naked hand??? I saw those kinds of chillies on masterchef!!! yup, chilli does breakdown the fat by improving the metabolism of the body but doesn't your stomach burn??? Oh my..mine does even if I have a bit of it :D
haha...potatoes is the only thing they make in the hostels...ask me about that :( even i had stopped eating almost an year back just coz i simply couldn't eat and i lost a lot of my weight but the thing is i became weaker and the face was looking all harassed and sad and had lost all its glow!! so, yup, crash dieting is one of the worst methods to lose weight and yup, me too believe in that stroking of the tummy superstition :)

    1. I think so...I never touch it with my hand so much. It doesn't burn if you don't eat a lot....I eat only a little bit all the time. I don't recommend crash dieting either. Weight loss is only good if it makes you look good... if it makes you lose all the glow, better eat & be merry :)

Lots of Green/Red Tea... CHECK Smelling food before eating... CHECK Not pat your tummy after food... CHECK Dance after my Gym routine... CHECK

My problem is my mom's a bengali, so my liking and addiction for sweets and FRIED fish is inherent :( I really need to fight that you know!!!

Your post is sooo awesome and soo honest.. Unlike so many others that I have read that tells people to be "healthy" and "eat everything" and all that.. but seriously to lose weight initially one has to take some drastic measures...

Loved loved loved this post of yours and You mentioned MANIPUR roo :D ♥♥♥
I am sooo bookmarking it :D

    1. Aww...love you for saying all that girl! :) I think you look fine, and need not worry about the sweets & fried fish (YUM!)I just wrote what I know, and what I think worked. I know what you mean about all the cliches & BS...I've read them in tons of magazine before, and I'm not going to write the same stuff, because I never followed them myself.

    1. Nowhere in the post did I say eat chillies & lemons "madly". You may have not read it correctly. I have readers of all sorts. Some may like a certain post I write, some may not.

  34. hey Cynth, this is a good one. In fact I do believe tea eap the green tea and lime helps in weight reduction. After I had quit taking dancing lessons, I had suddenly become very fat and it won't just shed. later, I started taking tea ( sans sugr and milk) and lime water and it did work. Apart form that brisk walking also helped. Now, even though I am not really thin and yet on the plumper side may be ( not with a fat tummy though), I am comfortable with my body.

I so wante to taste the Bhoot Joloka you know because I heard so much about it!

  37. hehe i love this post! and its nice to see some1 who is 40 kgs and quite happy about it.. i was WAS also 35 kgs throughout my teens and my early 20s before i became pregnant. i could fit in anything tiny and look super comfortable.. i got pregnant and gained loads of weight.. almost 15 kgs.. its a year now.. i reduced loads and i think i am almost back to my old days except for the tummy! THE TUMMY i tell u is the most stubborn one.. i think dancing should help.. dance tummmy dance away :P

  38. you know, i can relate to the above post like so much__except, the sweets part. I can't live without them! Porky, stuffed, wacky_everything i was..and now I became the envy of my then adored/pretty/doll-like/'sexy' cousin :D ..The stretch marks story goes__i have them etched like "animal-scratches" all the way from my shoulders to upper arms, then slashes like knife-scars on my lower back(peeks through sarees on ocassions!), upper thighs and waist..but the arm-and-shoulder ones are "dug into" my skin..they look as if i am injured and look white against my wheatish darker complexion. I have stopped the "spaghetti straps route", though and nothing but cap sleeves do for me, I wasnt to get rid of them!! I love me but the arms!! Any solutions? creams? dont say laser or carboxytherapy yet..
    and u r beautiful(i am straight! :D) :)

  40. Funny. I used to be super skinny in school and college. Used to be teased a lot (the rumor about me being anorexic was the worst). Funnier still, I hogged the way you did when you were in college
Now, I am blessed with two tyres. Not so funny is the part where I tell you I hardly eat and also drink a lot of tea

    Meh :P

I ♥ finding little notes in my Vanity Case, so do drop one. I read all of them & I try my best to reply to each & every one of them [check back in 2-3 days =D] but most times it's physically impossible! Either way, I love to hear from you & really appreciate you taking the time out to share your thoughts <3

Thank you for reading! :)
